Formed in 2013, Handsworth Creative is a group of artists and workers living in and associated with this suburb of Birmingham. We are interested in local arts and history, and the group exists to help promote arts projects related to Handsworth.
Our work has included a graphic art and cartoon project with local schools and youth centres, which resulted in an exhibition of colourful PopArt Prints of Handsworth Personalities. We have recorded interviews, both audio and on film, with local Elders and personalities. We are involved in making a short film based on the Black Patch, a local park that is historically associated with Romany Gypsies. And we are hosting the prestigious Handsworth Park Arts Trail, a three year project that will result in 6 large, permanent sculptures in Handsworth’s beautiful public park. As a long-term project, we have plans to produce a History of Handsworth in comic book format.
Handsworth Creative cic is a not-for-profit community interest company. We are grateful for support from Birmingham City Council, The Arts Council, and National Lottery funding.
