GYPSY BOY
A film by Surjit Simplay
Filmmaker Surjit Simplay has been a Charlie Chaplin fan since she was a kid, and when evidence emerged that Chaplin was born not in the East End but in a caravan in Smethwick's Black Patch Park, cogs began to turn.
VERANDA STORIES
The Pyramid Tower from Veranda Stories is located a few hundred yards from the ‘Sons of Rest’ building. The galvanized steel tower was designed by Birmingham based visual artist Pauline Bailey, in collaboration with the Women’s Sewing Group at Saathi House who co-designed many mandala patterns, which Pauline then developed and had laser cut to decorated each side of the three-metre high steel tower.
SONS OF REST
Sons of Rest Building was saved from demolition after it became vandalised in the 1990s and was renovated as part of the restoration of Handsworth Park, which was completed in 2006. It is now a meeting place for local community groups, serving the whole community.
